The Structure of Consciousness about Aged People in Korea

Abstract
|
|
|
This survey was done during June I to 30, 19 80 against 803 people aged over 20 who were residing in large, middle & small cities aid., rural & residual ?area. The age was devided into 6groups, of the range of 10 years.
The results were the followings ;
1. Through the general appreciation over all age -groups, the most importance of the life was; "health" 40.5%, "descendants, success" 31.8%, "self success" 14. 1% among all subjbcts. The advanced age groups wanted descendants´ success much more than the younger groups.
2. The most importance in social status was a member of family 45.7%. individual 26.7% member of country 18.2%. The degree of consiousness about member of family was highest in 3050 age groups.
3. The answer for the question whether their opinions a3-6-respected in the family was 49. 1%, "depend on situation" 42.6%, "not respect" 7.3 %. The 50-69 .ge group was respected more than the other age groups. And 53.2% of 20-29 age group was depending on situation.
4. The desirable aspect of life in old age was "to live with their children in the same house"54 .7%, "to live seperately from their children" 22 .2%, "depend on situation" 18.2%. Elderly subject hoped to live with their children, but younger subject ` did not.
5. Subject wanted to leave their inheritance to their children" 75.8%, "to the society or country" 13.0%, "to spouse" 6.7%.
6. The responsivility for supporting the aged poor was "the family" 65.6%, "society or country" 27.49/o, "themselves" 1.4%. Such tendency was the strongest in 3039 age group.
7. The plan for old age was "hobby or things to do" 29.3%, "economy" 21.0%, "nothing" 18. 3%.
8. The structure of consciousness about retierment was "must be prolonged" 63.5%, "must be abolished" 14.3%, "must be shortened" 5.5%.
9. The use of retirement grants was "saving" 38.0%, "for children or spouse" 17.3%, "own business" 16.9%. "own business" was relatively high in 20 49 age groups.
10. Somthing causes to be worried was "economics´! 36.9, "health" 19.1%, "problem of children" 14.3%.
11. The opinion about own health was "healthy" 58.7%, "not so good" 32.8%, "ofen sick" 6.4% Mail & young groups indicated higher incidence at "good health" than other groups.
12. The key of "health"was "proper exercise" 50.2%, "eat proper food" 19.1%, "sufficient sleep" 17.1%, "nothing" 11.7%.
13. 70.8% of the subjects had not taken a regular medical examination. The reasons were "good health" 28.1%, "cannot afi*A: 17.2%, "be anoying" 15.4%.
14. Sick care of old parents was "family" 86.9 %, "depends on circumstances" 5.6%, "local community and public agency" 4.6%.
15. The structure of consciousness about inter-relationship between work and leisure was "work is a man´s duty" 39.4%, "work for leisure of tomorrow" 24.2%, "work is onething and leisure is another" 15.8%. The aged group´s opinions about leisure time remarked "work is a man´ s duty", indicated higher incidence than youth.
16. 1) The ways of spending weekends were ".household affairs" 31.9%, "hobby" 16.1%, "TV & radio" 14.1 %, "mountin climbing" 7.1%.
2) Companions spending leisure time with was "friends" 18.3%, "family" 17.9%, "spouse" 6.6%, "no answer" 46.8%.
3) The leisure time was "23 hours" 22.9 %, "no answer" 14.3%, "45 hours" 13.2%, "34 hours" 11.1%.
17. The imagination of the old people was "family leader" 49.6%, "respectable" 30.9%, "extremely obstinate" 10.2%, "worthless" 4.2%.
18. The relation between the aged and young was"-must help each other" 61.8%, "the young must obey the aged´ 14.6%, "the aged must obey the young" 11.3 %.
19. The tendency of the youth´s respect to the aged was "yes" 40.7%, "no" 36.9%, "don´t know" 20.5%.
